James Michael Tyler of "Friends" Dies at 59

James Michael Tyler, best known for his role as Gunther on "Friends," passed away on October 24 in Los Angeles, the actor's representative confirmed to TMZ (opens in new tab) Tyler, 59, was diagnosed with prostate cancer (opens in new tab) in 2018.

Tributes have been pouring in from those close to Tyler following the sad news. The family said in a statement, "Michael was known as an actor, musician, cancer awareness activist, and loving husband."

On "Friends," Tyler played Gunther, an awkward Central Park cafe manager with "hair brighter than the sun" who was in love with Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) throughout the series and was loved, although he never quite fit in with the group.

The Friends cast remembers Tyler as a beautiful presence on set. Aniston shared a scene from the show where Gunther finally declares his love for Rachel on Instagram (opens in new tab), captioning it, "Friends wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you for bringing laughter to the show and to our lives. We will miss you #JamesMichaelTyler."

Courteney Cox wrote (opens in new tab)." The amount of gratitude you brought to the room and showed me every day on the set is the amount of gratitude I have for knowing you. Rest in peace."

Lisa Kudlow wrote in memory of Tyler (opens in new tab), "James Michael Tyler, you will be missed. Thank you for being there for all of us. #JamesMichaelTyler, you will be missed.
