Prince William Blasts Billionaires' "Space Race" Amid Climate Crisis

Prince William is not at all impressed with the "space race" set up by billionaires Elon Musk (opens in new tab) and Jeff Bezos (opens in new tab) In a new interview with the BBC (opens in new tab), the future king implied that we clearly have bigger fish to fry here on Earth. We have bigger fish to fry, and the billionaires (opens in new tab) hinted that we should turn our attention to the climate crisis (opens in new tab) instead.

"There is a space race going on right now, and everyone is trying to start space tourism.

This comes after William Shatner of Star Trek fame took off into space, as arranged by Amazon founder Bezos. Compared to the "black ugliness" of space, Shatner returned with a new perception of the planet Earth, which he called "this sheet around us, this blanket, this blue comforter" (via the Guardian (open in new tab)).

Bezos himself, however, sees it differently and wants to create a "space colony (opens in new tab)." SpaceX founder Musk, on the other hand, wants to make humanity a "multi-planet species" (via BBC (open in new tab)).

For Prince William (open in new tab), their priorities are all wrong. 'I want the things I have enjoyed, the outdoor life, the nature and the environment to be preserved, not just for my children, but for everyone's children. If we are not careful, we are taking away from our children's future what we are doing now. I don't think that is fair." [Prince Philip (opens in new tab) is involved with WWF, Prince Charles (opens in new tab) has advocated environmentally friendly practices for decades when it was not mainstream, and Prince George (opens in new tab) goes to school and "picks up trash," a passion for the environment that has been in his family for four The royal family also spoke about how it has carried through generations.
