Meghan Markle Earns New Nickname During Visit to New York
This week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in New York City, attending a Global Citizen Live event in Central Park on Saturday (click here to watch (opens in new tab)). Since this is the first public appearance since Harry and his wife left the royal family's official duties, almost all of the events on the trip are being reported. Already, we've seen Princess Meghan wearing a chic (opens in new tab) coat, albeit unseasonably warm (it's 80 degrees, how could it be!) ), Prince Harry carrying an adorable monogrammed briefcase (opens in new tab), and now Princess Meghan has a new nickname. All this in just a couple of days!
Now, casual royal watchers may be huffing at the news that Princess Meghan has a new nickname. Meghan herself has spoken out (opens in new tab) about the appalling treatment by the press and the racism that underlies the coverage surrounding the couple, and names like "Meggitt" (opens in new tab) are used (opens in new tab) to describe their departure from the United Kingdom, never given out of kindness.
But good news: this new nickname isn't mean, it's just cute!
According to the Express (opens in new tab), it started when a reporter asked Princess Meghan, "Duchess, are you enjoying your time in New York?" He began by asking, "Are you enjoying your time in New York? To which Princess Meghan replied, "It is wonderful to be back, thank you." And Madame Duchess is no doubt the result of the collective inability of Americans to accurately remember the title that everyone in the royal family is supposed to have.
If you look closely at the video, it appears that Harry turns to Meghan and smiles at her while repeating "Madame Duchess":
Twitter, of course, reacted to the nickname like a duck jumping in Central Park water: from now on, Duchess Meghan Markle is our American royalty. Welcome back, Duchess!
