Prince Charles Reveals Fascinating Last Conversation with Philip
From what we know so far (opens in new tab), the BBC documentary Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers, which will air in the UK on September 22, will be chock full of heartwarming and sometimes funny anecdotes about Philip, who died on April 9 this year at age 99. It will be chock-full of heartwarming and sometimes funny anecdotes about Philip, who died on April 9 this year at the age of 99. We also know that Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry, and many other royals have agreed to share their memories of the Queen's late husband of 70 years.
And now we even know the last interaction Prince Charles had with his father, as told in the documentary. According to the Daily Mail, which obtained a preview of the footage (opens in new tab), Prince Charles called Philip at Windsor Castle on April 8 and asked him what his father wanted to do for his upcoming 100th birthday. Philip was not keen on having someone throw a party for him, so Charles proceeded cautiously. The first time he tried to broach the subject, Philip (who was a little deaf) could not understand him.
Charles explained that he tried again, a little louder: "I'm talking about your birthday! We're talking about your birthday! And whether or not there's going to be a reception!" [5 According to Charles, his father replied.
This is the typical tongue-in-cheek rebuttal the family expects from Philip.
According to the Daily Mail, in another episode in which Prince William talks about his late grandfather, the two were driving through the Balmoral estate in Scotland when they came across a group of young hikers. According to Prince William, "(Philip) stopped, rolled down his window, and said, 'Good morning. How are you doing? To which the littlest young man behind him turned around and said, 'Grandpa, go jogging! '" he said. (William admits that what the hiker actually said was more intemperate.) But Philip found the exchange amusing and, with feigned indignation, opened the window and said, "Young man of the day!"
He said.
The documentary seems to be a charming celebration of Philippe's life as a representative of the royal family for nearly a century. The documentary will premiere in the UK on Wednesday, September 22. No word yet on when we Americans will be able to view it, but we will update as soon as we know.
