Britney Spears' Lawyer Says Father Should Quit Her Conservatorship "Now, Today"

Britney Spears' attorney Matthew Rosengart has filed new court papers in an effort to expedite the removal of Jamie Spears from conservatorship. This comes after Britney Spears' father agreed in early August to step down from conservatorship "when the time is right" (open in new tab).

In a statement to People (open in new tab), Rosengart elaborated on the need for this new legal action, saying, "Mr. Spears was forced to admit in his August 12, 2021 'initial response' to Britney Spears' motion to dismiss that he would have to step down We were forced to concede that he would have to step down. However, as we wrote in our new filings with the Court, the quid pro quo preconditions Mr. Spears sought in his August 12, 2021 filing with the Court were inappropriate and unacceptable." These "preconditions" included the payment of a large sum of money from his daughter's estate.

"Britney Spears will not be bullied or extorted by her father," Rosengart added.

"Nor does Mr. Spears have the right to try to hold his daughter hostage by dictating the terms of his own expulsion. This is not his problem; it is a matter of his daughter's best interests, and he is legally obligated to expel her."

In Jamie Spears' court filing on August 12, his attorney stated, "Mr. Spears has faithfully continued to perform his duties and should not be suspended or removed. Mr. Spears is willing to step down when the time is right, but the transition must be orderly and include resolution of matters pending before the Court."

[8 [But this is not enough for Rosengart. Aside from the legal issues that require his immediate removal, if he loves his daughter, Mr. Spears should resign now, today, before he is suspended. That would be the right and proper thing to do."

Britney Spears has spoken at length both in and out of court about her painful situation under her conservatorship (opens in new tab). When the judge allowed her to choose her own attorney, this was considered one of the first major victories (opens in new tab) in her battle to remove her father from conservatorship and end this arrangement altogether.
