Prince Charles Reportedly Won't Allow Prince Andreu to Return to Royal Duties as Sexual Abuse Claims Continue

Prince Charles (opens in new tab) reportedly intends to permanently remove his brother Prince Andrew from his royal duties as officials continue to consider sexual abuse claims against the Duke of York.

As reported by People (opens in new tab), the accusations against Andrew have once again gained attention after Virginia Roberts Giuffre filed a lawsuit in New York this week.

"As detailed in the lawsuit, I was trafficked and sexually abused by him," Giuffre said in a statement.

"I am holding Prince Andrew accountable for what he did to me. Powerful and rich people cannot escape responsibility for their actions. I want other victims to know that it is possible to reclaim their lives by speaking out and demanding justice, instead of living in silence and fear."

Scotland Yard confirmed that it will review the allegations against Andrew for the third time (open in new tab).

A source close to Prince Charles told The Times of London (opens in new tab) that although he "loves his brother and has the capacity to sympathize with the accusations and arrows he endures," he "concluded long ago that it would probably be an insoluble problem. . has long ago come to the conclusion that it is probably an insoluble problem."

On a practical level, this means that Andrew will likely stop making formal appearances on behalf of the royal family.

"The specter of this [accusation] rears its head with frightening regularity, perhaps further reinforcing the feeling in the prince that the path back to the dukedom is clearly improbable," the source added.

If true, this news would not be a major change to the status quo. Andrew announced that he would step down from his royal duties in November 2019, and reports were already circulating in the summer of 2020 that the move would be permanent.
