Princess Diana would have written memoirs like Prince Harry's had she not died young, friend says

Prince Harry's decision to write his memoirs (opens in new tab) has been met with criticism (opens in new tab), but aides to his late mother, Princess Diana (opens in new tab), are confident she would have no problem with it. In fact, according to Princess Diana's friend and voice coach Stewart Pierce (opens in new tab), Princess Diana would have eventually done the same thing had she not died so young.

In 1995, during her separation from Prince Charles (open in new tab), Diana broke with royal tradition and gave a detailed and candid interview (open in new tab) to BBC journalist Martin Bashir about her negative experiences in marriage (this interview, still controversial, with allegations that Bashir may have coerced Diana (opens in new tab) into participating).

"During the Martin Bashir interview, she would not shut up, saying, 'I believe I have a role to play, and I will fight to the end,'" Pierce said of the now famous Panorama interview.

"It suggests a public display of betrayal, treachery, and dishonesty."

Pierce says that the same need to share his truth would have led Diana to finally write her own story, as Harry is now doing.

"Diana's life and purpose was to promise total transparency. So she would surely have written down in her autobiography many of the things she learned, not only from her experiences within the royal family but also from her experiences outside of it," he said, according to The Sun (opens in new tab). Diana loved to write personal letters, which for her added a personal touch and love to the people she cared about."

Harry's decision to speak out (open in new tab) about his own experiences and struggles as royalty, Pierce said, was in keeping with the legacy Diana set forth upon leaving the royal family.

"I feel that what Diana was doing was providing transparency about her experiences at the time that shocked the world and the changes she was trying to bring to the monarchy. What Harry is doing is not just revealing what happened, but providing information as to why the betrayal occurred."
