Prince William and Kate Middleton Send "Secret Messages" to Harry and Meghan, Says Royal Biographer
Prince William and Kate Middleton (opens in new tab) are scoring points with their recent string of royal engagements and public statements, experts say.
In a new interview with Closer magazine (opens in new tab), royal biographer Duncan Larcombe (opens in new tab), author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story (opens in new tab), offers insight into the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (opens in new (opens in new tab), offered his expert insight into the recent actions of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (opens in new tab). Specifically, he addressed what we can learn from Will and Kate's words and actions following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's explosive interview (opens in new tab) with Oprah Winfrey (opens in new tab) that aired this spring.
While the royal family has been largely silent on the whole Harry and Meghan (open in new tab) thing, Larkom says that Will and Kate (open in new tab) have sent very clear responses to the claims through their actions. In particular, he pointed to William's personal statement on Twitter earlier this month in response to racist attacks on social media after the Euro final by soccer players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bucayo Saca.
"I am disgusted by the racist abuse directed at England players after last night's game," William wrote in a personal tweet signed "W" that was sent out via the Kensington Royal Family account (opens in new tab). 'It is totally unacceptable that the players have to endure such abhorrent behavior. It must stop now and everyone involved must be held accountable."
"William and Kate are definitely on the charm offensive now and it is working. William has always spoken out against racism, but this was really powerful and especially appropriate after Harry and Meghan's accusations about the royal family," Larcombe said of the tweet. 'William and Kate have maintained a dignified silence, but now they are letting their actions speak for themselves. It's as if they were saying to Harry and Meghan, 'We're still here. The message is that life goes on with or without Harry.'"
Larkom believes that there is another argument from Harry and Meghan's Oprah interview (open in new tab) that Will and Kate are actively fighting.
In the interview, Harry spoke candidly about his strained relationships with several family members and even said that when he and Meghan decided to move to California, his father, Prince Charles, "stopped answering [his] phone" (open in new tab). Harry suggested that many of the problems he and Meghan faced were due to the institution of the royal family.
This suggestion suggested that other royals may also be dissatisfied with life in the royal family, but Harry acknowledged the different position his father and brother are in as heirs to the throne, saying, "My father and brother are trapped. My father and brother are trapped.
But according to Larcombe, that is not necessarily a sentiment with which Will and Kate (open in new tab) agree.
"There is no doubt," he says, "that the Cambridges are determined to take his accusation that William is 'trapped' in a role he doesn't want and show him otherwise. Kate is full of smiles wherever she goes, and she is returning the message to Harry and Meghan that 'we are happy, we are having fun, and we are not trapped, as you say.'"
