Kate Winslet talks about the meaning of her favorite red carpet dress.
In a new interview with People (opens in new tab), Kate Winslet reveals her favorite red carpet gown of all time and why it was so meaningful to her. Winslet said the ensemble she wore to the 1998 Academy Awards - an emerald green Givenchy gown with elaborate gold embroidery and a matching long-sleeved bolero - is still her number one 23 years later. 1998's ceremony saw her starring in "Titanic She was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for "Titanic.
Winslet's Academy Awards gown was custom-made for her by Alexander McQueen, then head designer at Givenchy. And it was not the most comfortable one, the actor revealed. 'It was like an embroidered sculpture,' she said. 'I'm not going to lie, the dress was uncomfortable. 'To be honest, the dress wasn't comfortable at all, even when I was sitting in it. But it was worth it because he made it for me." [After more than 20 years in the spotlight, Winslet is less willing to sacrifice comfort for a red carpet look. She says, "I always hope my feet don't hurt and that I'm not on my period."
In an interview with The Guardian earlier this year, Winslet reflected on her international fame in "Titanic" (opens in new tab) and the "downright cruel" treatment she subsequently received in the media. She said, "When I was in my twenties, people used to talk a lot about my weight. And I was asked to comment on my body. Then I was labeled as ballsy and outspoken. No, I was just defending myself.
"It was almost laughable how shocked, how critical, how downright cruel the tabloid reporters were to me. I still didn't really know who the hell I was!" . Winslet continued, rereading an old article written about her. They commented on my size, estimated my weight, and wrote articles about the diets I supposedly was on. It was critical, it was horrible, and it made me very angry to read it."
"I was so angry," she said.
"But it was so ...... I was also very moved."
"How different things are now.
