Princess Diana says she was "traumatized" by Prince Charles' engagement interview questions.
The problems in the relationship between Princess Diana (opens in new tab) and Prince Charles (opens in new tab) began long before she said "I do." In fact, the late Princess Diana eventually revealed that she was "traumatized" by certain words said by Prince Charles during their engagement session.
Like many royal couples, Prince Charles and Princess Diana (opens in new tab) gave an official interview when they announced their engagement in 1981 (opens in new tab). During the interview, they were asked about everything from how they first met to their wedding and honeymoon plans. At one point, the interviewer asked if they were in love, a question that Diana, then 19, thought was "ridiculous" given the context (that they had just announced their engagement).
Diana did not say much during the interview, but she did answer this question, "Yes, we love each other." Charles, however, gave a very different and, in hindsight, very targeted response.
"The day we announced our engagement, we had this terrible interview," she said, according to her biography, Diana: In Her Own Words (opens in new tab). And this ridiculous (reporter) asked, 'Are you in love? I thought, what a thick question. And I said, 'Yes, of course,' and Charles turned around and said, 'Whatever you mean by love. And that totally threw me off. I thought, 'What a bizarre answer. That was traumatic."
