Prince George turned eight years old.

Prince George (opens in new tab) is growing up and reaching fashion milestones.

The young royal looked very grown-up (and very royal) when he attended the UEFA Euro 2020 Championships earlier this month with his parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton (opens in new tab). At the games, George looked like Will's minuteman in his smart blue suit and tie. [Sophie Millman, founder and creative director of Trotters (open in new tab), told People (open in new tab) about the look. 'He must have felt very cool and grown up in his new jacket and tie.'

Millman, who has dressed all three of the Cambridges' children (opens in new tab) over the years, says the event was the perfect time for George to show off his new grown-up look. As royal fans know, George has typically worn shorts in the past (with a few notable exceptions, like his walk with the royal family on Christmas 2019 (opens in new tab)). This is in keeping with a long-standing tradition among royalty (and other aristocratic types), but it is not a hard-and-fast rule.

"I think it's definitely a royal look, and there's something rather odd about British schools where kids have to wear shorts in the winter when their knees are freezing cold.

George turns eight at the end of this month, which, according to old etiquette experts, is the right age for aristocratic boys to switch from shorts and knee socks to full-length pants.

"Boys wear short pants until they are eight," Ingrid Sward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine (opens in new tab), told People in 2014." It's very British."

Sward explained that the switch from much shorter shorts to long pants is a big thing for boys, and it is a change that George is actually making a little earlier than William.

"They're in shorts until they're eight, and then they go, 'Woo, long pants. They suddenly feel very grown up," Sward said.

"Prince William didn't wear long pants until he went to school at Radgrove when he was eight or nine."
