Lynn Spears Deposed to Court that Daughter Britney Spears Can Take Care of Herself

Britney Spears' mother, Lynn Spears, through her attorney, has told the court that her daughter can take care of herself and should be given permission to choose her own attorney regarding her conservatorship, as NBC News reported (opens in new tab) Tuesday In a petition filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Lynn Spears' attorney said the pop star's "capacity is certainly different than it was in 2008 when her conservatorship began." The filing further stated that Britney Spears has toured and produced several albums since the conservatorship began.

"Currently, and for many years past, the conservatee has been able to take care of herself and, in fact, has earned literally hundreds of millions of dollars as an international celebrity within the scope of this conservatorship. Her capacity is certainly different than it was in 2008, and the conservator should no longer be held to the 2008 standard."

In her devastating June 23 court testimony (open in new tab), Spears said she was unaware that she could file a motion to end her 13-year conservatorship, which she described as "abusive," and had been advised by her court-appointed attorney, Samuel Ingham, not to speak out. She said she had "developed a relationship" with attorney Ingham, but told the court she wanted the right to "choose" her own attorney.

Ingham told the court Tuesday that he would resign as Spears' conservator (open in new tab) as soon as Spears receives another court-appointed attorney. Spears' manager, Larry Rudolph, also resigned after her testimony, and asset management firm Bessemer Trust filed a motion to remove him as co-conservator.
