Queen vetoes Princess Beatrice's original name because it is "too yuppie."
Princess Beatrice (open in new tab) apparently had an almost entirely different name.
According to a report shared by the Mirror (open in new tab), Beatrice's parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson (open in new tab) (aka the Duke and Duchess of York), originally had another name in mind for their first daughter. Problem is, the Queen (open in new tab) apparently thought their first choice of name was "too yuppie" for the royal baby.
While there are many traditions involved in having a baby in general, for members of the royal family, the list of traditions is longer and more rigorous; the Mirror reports that one tradition that members of the royal family follow when they are expecting a baby is to have an " informal chats" with the queen about her choice of name and to see if she is happy with it.
Normally, the Queen has no problem with the choice of name and gives her blessing, but apparently this was not the case when Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson visited the Queen in 1988. Indeed, according to the Mirror, "because of the Queen's concerns, it took two weeks for the Yorks to officially announce her name."
According to the Mirror, the couple wanted to name their daughter Princess Annabelle, but the Queen rejected the name as "too yuppie." However, after the Queen expressed concern about the name Annabelle, the Queen (opens in new tab) saved the day and suggested the name Beatrice (opens in new tab). The inspiration was reportedly rooted in history, after Queen Victoria's youngest daughter.
Andrew and Sarah obviously took the Queen's advice (opens in new tab) and honored and thanked the monarch with the middle name Beatrice. Her full name is Beatrice Elizabeth Mary, in honor of both her grandmother and great-grandmother.
