Judge denies Britney Spears' request to remove her father from her conservatorship.
A judge has rejected Britney Spears' November request to remove her father from her conservatorship, the BBC reports (opens in new tab). Spears' attorney, Samuel Ingham, asked a Los Angeles court last year to end Jamie Spears' role as sole conservator of his daughter's estate, saying the pop icon is "afraid of her father."
Although Spears' request to replace her father as sole conservator with Bessemer Trust, a private wealth management firm, was denied, Judge Brenda Penney agreed to appoint the firm as co-conservator.
Wednesday's ruling is not in response to the disruptive testimony (opens in new tab) Spears gave in court last week. Spears also said she was forced to perform and was given the mood stabilizer lithium against her will. I just want my life back," she told the court.
According to the BBC, the judge cannot make a ruling based on Spears' latest testimony until she files a formal petition to end her conservatorship.
Earlier this week, as reported by the Guardian (opens in new tab), Jamie Spears asked the court to investigate her daughter's statements, stating that she no longer has control over her daughter's personal life, only over financial and business matters. Court-appointed conservator Jodi Montgomery has managed Spears' personal decisions since September 2019.
In a filing Tuesday, Jamie Spears' attorney asked the court to investigate "serious allegations of forced labor, forced medical care and treatment, improper medical care, and restrictions on personal rights." The filing also stated that her daughter had the right to "give informed consent to her own medical treatment."
"Given the nature of the allegations and claims, it is critical that the Court confirm whether Ms. Spears' testimony was accurate in order to determine what corrective action is necessary.
