Prince Harry and Prince William attend the unveiling of a statue of Princess Diana
Lingering tensions aside, Prince William and Prince Harry together unveiled a new statue of their late mother, Princess Diana, on her 60th birthday. The event took place in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, reportedly one of Princess Diana's favorite places (opens in new tab).
Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and Prince Charles were absent from the event, along with the rest of the royal family. Instead, Harry and William were accompanied by several members of Princess Diana's family, the statue committee, sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, and garden designer Pip Morrison. The statue has been in the works since February 2017 (opens in new tab) and aims to "reflect on her mother's life and her legacy."
According to royal reporter Rebecca English (opens in new tab) and royal reporter Omid Scobie (opens in new tab), beneath the statue is an excerpt from The Measure of A Man, which was featured in the program for Princess Diana's 2007 memorial service There is a pedestal with an inscription." There is a unit of measurement of this woman's worth / As a woman regardless of her birth / Not what her status was. / But did she have a heart?"/ "How did she fulfill her God-given role?"
Below are some photos and video of the event, including a new statue:
Prince Harry arrived in England last week and spent five days in isolation (open in new tab) at Frogmore Cottage after testing negative for COVID-19. Earlier this week, Harry told the virtual 2021 Diana Award (open in new tab) winners (open in new tab), "This weekend, my brother and I are celebrating my mother's 60th birthday.
A bittersweet but special moment for the brothers.
