Princess Diana's new statue will be surrounded by her favorite flowers
Today, Prince Harry and Prince William will unveil a new statue of Princess Diana on her 60th birthday. The statue will be placed in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, Princess Diana's former residence, which the Guardian reports (opens in new tab) was redesigned with Diana in mind.
More than 4,000 new flowers have been planted in the garden, including 100 forget-me-nots, a favorite of Princess Diana (Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, introduced forget-me-nots in her book "The Bench" (opens in new tab) as a tribute to her late mother-in-law). According to The Guardian, the redesigned garden will also include 200 roses, 300 tulips, about 50 sweet peas, 500 lavender plants, and about 100 dahlias. The redesign began in October 2019, with five gardeners working a total of 1,000 hours.
Designer Pip Morrison told the press, "This project is very special because the Sunken Garden was Princess Diana's favorite place. We worked carefully to ensure that the new layout and planting scheme would complement the statue of Princess Diana and provide a serene place for visitors to Kensington Palace to remember her."
Graham Dillamore, Deputy Head of Gardens and Estates at Historic Royal Palaces, recalls, "Diana regularly stopped to admire the changing floral displays in the Sunken Gardens during her stay at Kensington Palace, always stopping to chat with me and the other gardeners who tend to it. She recalls, "We would stop and talk with me and the other gardeners who tended to the garden.
A royal source told The Guardian that today's statue unveiling ceremony will be "a small event and a very personal moment for the family," with plans scaled back significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Garden designer Morrison will attend with William and Harry, as will sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley.
