Serena Williams announces she will not attend the Tokyo Olympics

Serena Williams will not be competing in the Tokyo Olympics, it was announced at a press conference Sunday on the eve of Wimbledon. Williams, a four-time gold medalist, told reporters, "Actually, I'm not on the Olympic list."

"There are many reasons for my Olympic decision," Williams said, according to the New York Times (opens in new tab). ''And Williams said (opens new tab), 'I'm going to do it again. Another day. I'm sorry. It used to be a great place for me. I haven't really thought about it, so I'm just going to let it go and not think about it."

One factor in Williams' decision may be that COVID-19 restrictions will prevent international spectators from attending the Tokyo event, separating him from his 3-year-old daughter Olympia. Last month, Williams interviewed reporters (opens in new tab) in Rome prior to the Italian Open and was asked if she would compete in Tokyo if Olympia could not accompany her, "I've never spent 24 hours without her. We are best friends."

Williams won the singles gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and three doubles gold medals with her sister Venus: Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008, and London 2012. She also holds an astounding 23 Grand Slam singles titles and is currently preparing for Wimbledon, where she could win her 24th title.
