Why Princess Meghan and Harry Rejected Archie's "Earl of Dumbarton" Title

Since the birth of their son Archie, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have done everything to protect him, from keeping his birth out of the spotlight (opens in new tab) to suing tabloids that use drones to try to obtain photos of Archie (opens in new tab opens in new tab), and everything in between. It also turns out that the parents refused to give their child a specific royal title so that they would not be teased later.

According to the Telegraph, Archie, the royal heir, had the option of being named "Earl of Dumbarton." (Harry and Meghan were given the titles "Duke and Duchess of Sussex," "Earl and Countess of Dumbarton," and "Baron and Baroness Kilkeel" by the Queen when they married.) Harry and Meghan, however, refused, fearing it would lead to bullying. They did not like Archie being called the Earl of Dumbarton because it begins with the word "dumb."

A second source added that it was not only Meghan's concern, but "Harry was worried too."

Instead, Archie is simply referred to as "Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Master Windsor."

Harry and Meghan were (understandably) worried about bullying (kids are mean), and in a solo interview with Oprah in March, they revealed that they wanted to give Archie a royal title (as per protocol) to ensure his protection. However, this was denied, and the couple hinted that racism may have been the underlying cause.

"[The office] said they didn't want Archie to be a prince or princess, that it wasn't a rite of passage, that he wasn't going to get security," Meghan said. 'This went on for the last few months of my pregnancy. He said he wasn't going to get security because he wasn't going to be a prince. But if you say that titles affect that protection, then we have created this monster machine around us in terms of clickbait and tabloid fodder. You have allowed it to happen.

And while many thought that Archie's royal status might change once his grandfather, Prince Charles, ascended the throne, it has recently become clear that the Prince of Wales will not allow it. In fact, Prince Charles is considering changing legal documents to prevent Archie or his sister Lilibet from being nominated as a prince or princess.
