Where is Lilibet Diana Mountbatten Windsor in the royal line of succession?

Congratulations are in order for the Sussex couple, who have just joined their family of four! Meghan Markle has given birth to her second child with Prince Harry, whom she named Lilibet "Lili" Diana. Archie's new sister will be the Sussexes' last child. The Sussexes said in an interview that they intend to have only two children. And although Meghan and Harry have retired from senior royalty, their new daughter is a close descendant of Prince Charles, who will become queen and king, and thus higher in the royal line of succession (opens in new tab).

But how high up, you ask, are they? Among them are Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie and their children, and the Queen's other children, Andrew, Edward, and Anne. Prince William and his children, who are higher in the line of succession to the throne than Harry's family, are not among them. [If Kate Middleton and Prince William had more children, Lilibet would move down to 10th place, but as of now, Lilibet is 9th in the royal line of succession, immediately followed by the Queen's three children (other than Prince Charles) and her own children.

Lilibet, like her brother Archie and cousin August, is very likely to have no royal titles, at least for now. When Archie was born and baptized without a royal title, it was assumed that this was Meghan and Harry's way of allowing him to lead a normal life, but the couple disputed this in an interview on Oprah. Meghan said, "They didn't want Harry to be a prince or princess. It was really hard. ...... In the last months of her pregnancy, she said, "Wait a minute. If he's not going to be a prince, he has to be safe. (Meghan worried that if Archie was not a prince, he would not have royal security.)

Meghan and Harry implied that the lack of titles was a racist decision on the part of the palace. Meghan told Oprah, "Around the same time as this, we were having a parallel conversation about him not getting security and not being given a title, along with concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be once he was born."

Palace officials told (opens in new tab) Us Weekly magazine (opens in new tab), however, that there is a "ritual. Under the royal protocol established by King George V, only those in the direct line of succession to the throne are entitled to the title of prince or princess. ...... When Prince Charles became king, Archie should have been given the title as well."

What this means, of course, is that when Prince Charles ascends the throne at the end of Elizabeth II's reign, Archie will become a prince and his sister Lilibet may become a princess. And, of course, at that point, the entire order of succession would change.
