HBO Max's "Friends" Reunion Special: What We Know

Finally, finally, finally! After months of frenzied speculation (this is just me speculating) and teasers, HBO Max and the stars of "Friends" have confirmed that yes, the reunion special is happening (opens in new tab). And what's more, on May 19, the streamer dropped a reunion trailer that is sure to bring all the tears, smiles, and goosebumps.

The two-minute video shows the original cast returning to the show's original soundstage in Burbank, California." Where's the tissue box?" Jennifer Aniston says as she walks through the iconic purple apartment/set.

The trailer also shows the cast playing show trivia (yes, the same game as "The One With the Embryos"), doing table reads (Lisa Kudrow definitely still has her Phoebe edge), generally laughing and reminiscing about good times together We also get glimpses of them doing things like.

Specials include Reese Witherspoon (Jill, Rachel's sister), Tom Selleck (Richard, Monica's longtime boyfriend), Maggie Wheeler (Janice, Chandler's on again off again girlfriend), and David Beckham, Justin Bieber, Malala Yousafzai, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Mindy Kaling, and many other regular guest stars like superfans. The host is James Corden.

The "Friends" reunion special will be delivered on May 27. This is a Thursday, the day the original series aired on NBC.

Courteney Cox chats with comedian Kevin Nealon on his Hiking Youtube series with Kevin first (opens in new tab) for E News! (opens in new tab) about the reunion. Let's just say she's as excited as we are." So the exciting thing is that we're all going to be together for the first time, in a room, actually talking about the show, and it's going to be HBO Max and I'm so excited," Cox said at the time.

"But we've never really had all of us do that and actually sit there and talk and reminisce about this incredible experience that we've had. It's going to be great," she added.

The last time the cast came together, she said, was for dinner at Cox's house in October.

"I don't know how long it's been, maybe 15 years, and we finally got together for dinner," she said. And when we get together, it's never ...... It doesn't happen very often, like twice since we finished the show, it's just great fun. We have a good laugh.

Jennifer Aniston posted a photo of the six stars on Twitter on an otherwise unremarkable Friday in mid-February, "Happening. ...... and tagged HBO Max. Cox and her other co-stars shared the same post (open in new tab) at the same moment.

And everyone went wild. (Open in new tab)

According to Variety, which broke the news, each star will get about $2.5 million for the special. The show's executive producers Kevin Bright, Marta Kaufman, and David Crane will return to the project, and each of the six main cast members will also serve as executive producers The reason for the May debut is that it is the start of the HBO Max and the streaming service is hoping to stimulate new subscribers with news of the Friends reunion.

"Friends" will leave Netflix at the end of 2019 and is currently available on HBO Max.

In a statement, Kevin Reilly, chief content officer of HBO Max, teased more specials." This could be called what they all came back together to do." We will be reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courtney, Matt, Lisa, and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire "Friends" library. We think this reunion special will capture that spirit and bring the original and new fans together."
