Prince Harry says he is experiencing a "digital pandemic" of misinformation in his Vax Live speech.
Prince Harry (open in new tab) said that in 2021 we will experience not one but two pandemics.
Along with his wife Meghan Markle (open in new tab), Harry co-chaired Global Citizen's "Vax Live: The Concert To Reunite The World" (open in new tab), an event in which Harry appeared numerous times. Harry made several appearances at this event. His first speech at the show focused on the importance of compassion and empathy for the suffering of others in the midst of a pandemic; in his second speech, Harry addressed another issue close to his and Meghan's heart: the problem of misinformation on the Internet and in the media. [Harry told the crowd of front-line and essential workers who watched the concert live at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles last week, "I understand why people are confused about vaccines and sometimes don't know what to think or believe. We are experiencing a viral pandemic alongside a digital pandemic." Like viruses, online has no borders. So when vaccine misinformation and disinformation spreads, magnified by social media and some traditional media outlets, it exposes a collective threat to humanity. As long as countries are fighting COVID-19. We are all fighting it."
That evening, Harry delivered an impassioned plea for empathy (opens in new tab):
"We are also gathering because we cannot end this pandemic unless we act collectively with unprecedented commitment to shared humanity. Vaccines must be distributed to everyone in the world. We cannot rest or truly recover until it is fairly distributed to every corner of the world. The mission before us is one that cannot fail, and that is exactly what we are doing tonight. Viruses do not respect borders and access to vaccines cannot be determined by geographical conditions. Vaccines must be accepted as a fundamental right of all people. We should not take the easy way out and think that we will be ok while so many others are suffering. In reality, and especially in this pandemic, when someone suffers, we all suffer. We must go beyond ourselves with empathy and compassion for those we know and those we do not. We must lift up the entire human race and ensure that no one is left behind. And tonight, we stand in solidarity with the millions of families across India who are struggling against a devastating second wave.
