Regina King to Wear Louis Vuitton at the 2021 Academy Awards
Regina King has been a legend this year, from her stunning Louis Vuitton look at the Golden Globes (opens in new tab) to her Oscar de la Renta and Christopher John at the NAACP Image Awards (opens in new tab) and CDGA Awards (opens in new tab). Rogers' gorgeous looks in shades of rust and poppy, to one legendary red carpet look after another. For Hollywood's biggest night, King once again tapped Louis Vuitton's Nicolas Ghesquière, this time for a custom look that felt more fairy-tale and dreamy than sleek and modern.
Awards season in the COVID era was all about digital red carpets, zooming acceptance speeches, and socially distant seats. And while much of that will remain at the 93rd Academy Awards, tonight promises the first in-person red carpet since 2019. King never disappoints on the carpet, but this look feels like the perfect finale to a season of eye-popping looks.
King's sky blue gown has a modern-day Cinderella vibe, with crystal encrusted, dramatic winged shoulders and a wide open V-neckline. The look is more whimsical than any dress King has worn this season, yet incorporates the architectural details and curve-enhancing silhouette we have come to expect from her on the red carpet. The playfulness of this silhouette led King to keep her styling edgy yet simple, opting for a sleek bob, steel blue smoky eyes, and Forevermark jewelry.
King will present the award this evening, and the 2019 Supporting Actress winners will be on the red carpet with the cast and crew of her directorial debut, One Night in Miami, including Leslie Odom Jr. who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the film, celebrating his Academy Award nomination.
Speaking with Regina's stylists, Wayman and Micah (opens in new tab), E! News reported that Regina's gown "took 140 hours to make and was embroidered with more than 62,000 sequins and 4,000 crystals." They also explained that Regina is always involved in the design process of her red carpet looks from start to finish, going over sketches, colors, designs, and every detail before the look comes to fruition in the atelier and on the red carpet. We tell her our vision and our story, and we build from there. We approach it from a fashion standpoint, and she approaches it from a technical standpoint, with the eye of a director."
