The Queen left a handwritten, heartbreaking note on Prince Philip's coffin.

The Queen (opens in new tab) made a sweet final gesture of love to her late husband, Her Royal Highness Prince Philip.

On Saturday, Queen Elizabeth II (opens in new tab) mourned the death of her husband of 73 years at a small, private funeral service at St. George's Chapel in Windsor. The Queen, following the guidelines of COVID-19 on social distancing, attended the funeral alone and found a way to honor the Duke of Edinburgh in a very personal way in a simplified funeral service.

As reported by People (opens in new tab), the Queen placed a handwritten final note to her late husband on the coffin, which could be seen (though not clearly enough to read) throughout the funeral service.

Allegedly (opens in new tab), the queen signed the note "Lilibet."

Unsurprisingly, the palace refused to comment on the note or its contents, simply stating that it was "private."

The Queen has publicly shared her love for His Royal Highness Prince Philip and her grief over his death through statements from the Palace and posts on the Royal Family's official social media channels. In a post shortly after Philip's death last weekend, the Palace featured a touching quote from the Queen about her husband in 1997.

"He was simply my strength and support all these years. I, his entire family, and this country and many other countries owe him greater than he claims or we know," she said in a quote shared on Instagram along with a portrait of the Queen and Prince Philip taken by Annie Lebowitz in 2016 ( Open in new tab).
