Meghan Markle and Prince Harry face security threat at their Montecito home
This is bad: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are facing repeated security threats at their Montecito home. According to data from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department, police responded to "phone requests, alarm activations, and property crime" calls, the Telegraph reports (opens in new tab).
According to the Telegraph, four calls were recorded last July, when the Sussexes moved into their new home, one as a phone call request and the others as alarm activations. Police were also called to the house in August, November, December, and January.
The December call to police concerned a trespassing incident (open in new tab) in which a man traveled from Ohio to California to break onto the Sussex couple's property on both December 24 and December 26. This man received only a warning for the first break-in, but was arrested and charged for the second break-in.
The Telegraph report comes after Meghan and Harry shared their security concerns in an interview with Oprah Winfrey (opens in new tab). Meghan told Winfrey that the royal family did not want her son Archie to become a prince, so he could no longer receive security, and that she pleaded with the royal family not to withdraw Harry's security after the couple retired to the senior royal family. The Sussexes also said that they signed a Netflix and Spotify contract for their own security after the royal family cut Harry off financially.
"I told Harry's family, 'It's clear that protecting me and Archie is not a priority. We accept that. That's fine. Please protect my husband. I saw the death threats. We see racist propaganda. Please protect him. Please don't release his security and announce it to the world when he and we are at our most vulnerable,' Meghan said, according to BuzzFeed News (opens in new tab).
Harry also expressed his surprise at having his security lifted. 'I was born into this position. I inherited the risk. So I was shocked. That completely changed my plans," he told Winfrey.
