Tonight, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah Winfrey for their first primetime interview since their 2017 engagement. After watching the trailer (opens in new tab), many royal fans expected it to be dramatic, but no one could have predicted what Harry and Meghan would reveal about their time in the royal family before they officially step down as senior royals (opens in new tab) in January 2020.
For those who missed the special, the most shocking and genuinely interesting tidbits gleaned from the Sussex couple's confessional interview are summarized below.
Meghan and Harry had lunch at the Royal Lodge with the rest of the Royal Family when they first met Queen Elizabeth. (Apparently she took a deep bow.) Meghan was relieved that she did not know much about the royal family beforehand.
. From a factory farm. Harry says that Meghan always wanted chickens.
In May 2018, Harry and Meghan were married in their backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury before a grand wedding ceremony watched by the world. Meghan said the wedding the world saw was not "our day," but was planned for the world.
Meghan said it was a "turning point" around six months after the wedding. She denies this and says that is when everything changed. In fact, she says the opposite happened. A few days before the wedding, Kate got upset with the flower girl's dress and made Megan cry. Kate later apologized and sent her flowers. What was hard to get over, according to Megan, was being blamed for something she didn't do. 'I'm not sharing that article about Kate to vilify her. Because she's a good person."
When asked by Oprah whether she was being silent or not, Meghan said, "The latter." Everyone in her world (i.e., her friends and family) was instructed to always "no comment" to "protect her." Meghan said that after her marriage, she realized she was not protected and that the palace was willing to lie to protect other members of the royal family.
Meghan said that the Queen was always wonderful to her and gave her pearl earrings and a matching necklace. Although Meghan said that being part of the royal family is "not what it seems."
She said she would go on the record and deny "the most ridiculous story," but the story that she made Kate cry was "the beginning of a real character assassination."
Princess Meghan said that the palace did not want Archie to be a prince and that he was not going to receive security without a title. To this day, there is no explanation for this. The fact that the family's first person of color would not receive a title was something that distressed Princess Meghan.
During the months she was pregnant, there were conversations between someone at the palace and Harry about how dark Meghan and Harry's baby would be. Meghan could not say who the conversation was with because "it would be damaging to them." Harry said he would never share information about that conversation.
Trigger warning: suicide, below.
He said he really thought about it all the time. Princess Meghan said she needed to seek help from the institution (i.e., a few people), but they would not allow it. They said there was nothing they could do to protect her because she was not a "paid employee of the institution." One of the people Megan reached out to for advice was one of Diana's best friends. Megan was ashamed to admit that she needed help, but now understands that admitting she needed help was an act of courage.
. And she is not worried about backlash from them. 'I've already lost so much,' she said. 'I lost my father, I lost my baby, I almost lost my name. "Princess Meghan wants you to know that life is worth living and that you can get out on the other side.
Archie will have a little sister. Harry said he would be grateful for any children, but is very thrilled to have a boy and a girl. A boy and a girl, what more could you want? Harry said. Meghan and Harry have also said they will not have more than two children, and the due date is in the summer.
Harry said they were desperate to get away because they had asked for help and were not getting it. They were going to step back as senior royals and take a break from the "constant barrage." Harry said his greatest fear was that history would repeat itself, referring to his mother with Meghan. Harry said he ultimately left the royal family because of a lack of support and understanding
.
He said he had too much respect for his grandmother and that he had been talking to her much more in the past year. When Megan and Harry were in Canada, he also had a conversation with his father "before he stopped answering my calls." Harry then took matters into his own hands.
... But that changed after Meghan's tour of Australia, where she became pregnant.
Meghan wrote to the royal family asking them to ensure Harry's safety and not raise security, but was told that this was not possible. Princess Meghan already knew that she and Archie were not a priority.
She said she was trapped in the system, but did not know she was trapped then. Harry also said that his mother would be angry and upset about what was happening to him and Megan right now.
He feels he has really let him down. He says he will "always love him," but a lot of hurtful things are happening.
He hopes that time will heal everything.
Now on the other side, Meghan says she is "not only surviving, but thriving" and that life with Harry is "better than any fairy tale." After all, Harry believes that Meghan has saved him, while Meghan believes that Harry has "saved us all."
