Prince Harry Says Racism Was 'Majority' of Reason for Leaving UK
In a previously unseen clip from Oprah's heartbreaking interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry (opens in new tab), Prince Harry said racism was "a big part" of why he and Meghan Markle left the UK and set up home abroad, first in Canada and then in the US. When Oprah asked if the couple left the UK because of racism against Meghan, Harry responded: "That's a big part of it."
Harry went on to describe a conversation he had at a private dinner in London for Sentebale supporters that he attended in January 2020. (Harry spoke candidly there about his reasons for leaving the royal family, saying, "The UK is my home and I love it. That will never change.") At that dinner, Harry was told by one person that "the British are bigoted."
"I totally disagree," Harry told the guest. (In context, the person Harry was talking to was a member of the British press.) Harry said that it is the press that is biased, not the country.
"No, it's not. It's the UK that is bigoted."
Harry went on to say that "if the source of the information is totally corrupt or racist," then it will permeate into the hearts and minds of the British people. He argued that his home country, the United Kingdom, is not a racist nation, but that the tabloid media spread racism throughout the country.
