Twitter Accuses British Tabloid of Treating Meghan Markle and Prince Andrew Differently

As the Duchess of Sussex faces renewed attacks from the British media (opens in new tab), some on Twitter are pointing out the double standard in the tabloids' treatment of her and Prince Andrew, who stepped down from his royal duties (opens in new tab) last year after his close relationship with disgraced financier and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein was revealed. Some have pointed out the double standard of the tabloids' treatment of her and Prince Andreu, who retired from the royal family last year after it was revealed that he had an intimate relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, a financier and sex trafficker.

Yesterday, The Times (opens in new tab) published a report that included a claim by a royal aide that one of Meghan's former advisors had filed a bullying complaint against Meghan while she was living at Kensington Palace. The report also came days before the broadcast of an interview (opens in new tab) between pregnant Meghan and Prince Harry's Oprah Winfrey.

"The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, especially as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to helping those who have experienced pain and trauma," a spokesman for the Sussex couple told BAZAAR.com in a statement shared with The Times.

A statement from the Sussexes' communications team to The Times read, "Let's call it a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation. We are disappointed to see such a slanderous portrayal of the Duchess of Sussex being given credence by the media."

Advocates and supporters of the couple were quick to point out the differences in the way the British media treated Princess Meghan and Prince Andrew.

Andrew's reported close friendship with the late Jeffrey Epstein (open in new tab), who was federally indicted for sex trafficking of minors, came under intense scrutiny in 2019. Virginia Roberts Giuffre (opens in new tab), one of the alleged victims of Epstein's sex trafficking ring, accused the prince of being one of Epstein's regular customers (opens in new tab) and of sexually abusing her on three occasions.

"He was an abuser. He was a participant," Giuffre (opens in new tab) told NBC's Savannah Guthrie in a 2019 interview.

At the time, Buckingham Palace denied the accusations (opens in new tab)." The statement said, "Lord York is appalled by the recent reports about Jeffrey Epstein's alleged crimes."

"His Royal Highness is disgusted by the exploitation of any human being and finds the suggestion that he condones, participates in, or encourages such acts abhorrent.

Sussex supporters noted that while both Buckingham Palace and the British media have kept the prince out of the spotlight despite disturbing allegations, the duchess has faced numerous (and often unsubstantiated) reports questioning her character.
