People Think Harry and Meghan's Arkwell Website Update Contains Jab at the Queen
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (open in new tab) have clearly stopped being silent about the royal exit. The decision was announced about a month before the Sussex couple is expected to hold a royal exit review with Queen Elizabeth II (open in new tab).
When news broke that Harry and Meghan (open in new tab) were officially parting ways with the royal family, Buckingham Palace (which had long been rumored and predicted by many royal experts, FYI) announced that the Sussexes would consequently be stripped of any remaining honorary titles and royal patronage to be truly stripped of their remaining honorary titles and royal patronage as a result. This is a particularly big blow to Harry, who had been widely reported (opens in new tab) to be seeking ways to retain his honorary military titles after his abdication, apparently to no avail.
Buckingham Palace's statement on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's departure from the Royal Family (opens in new tab) is as follows:
"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty the Queen that they will not return as active members of the Royal Family.
Following conversations with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the Queen has confirmed that by stepping away from her royal duties, it is not possible for her to continue with the responsibilities and obligations associated with her official duties. Therefore, the honorary positions and royal patronage held by the Duke and Duchess will revert to Her Majesty the Queen and be redistributed to active members of the royal family.
While everyone is saddened by the decision, the Duke and Duchess remain beloved members of the family.
In a surprisingly rare move from a royal family (even a non-working royal), the Sussexes have publicly fired back with a statement of their own.
"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and the rest of the world, as evidenced by their activities over the past year, and offer their continued support to the organizations they represent, regardless of their official role," a spokesman for the Sussex couple told Buckingham Palace (open in new tab) after the statement was released, said Omid Scobie, royal author and correspondent (and Sussex biographer) (open in new tab). 'We can all live lives of service. Service is universal.
That's all the background information you need before we get into the latest drama of the Royal Family. Let's get started. This week, the Sussexes updated the website for their nonprofit organization, Archewell (opens in new tab). When they relaunched the site late last year, the couple included an open letter and a childhood photo of themselves with their mother. I am my mother's son. And I am my son's mother. Together we bring you Archewell. We believe in the best of humanity. We believe in the best of humanity because we have seen the best of humanity. We have experienced compassion and kindness, both from our mothers and from strangers."
Note that even the tributes to Princess Diana and Doria Ragland were rumored to have irritated some members of the royal family (opens in new tab), especially Harry's brother, Prince William (opens in new tab). In the new update, the tribute to Harry and Meghan's mother has been removed and replaced with a description of the projects the Sussexes will be working on in the coming months. On the redesigned website, the Archewell logo is surrounded by the organization's motto, summed up in just four words: "Community. Service. Compassion. Action."
The four-word mission statement is a new addition to the website, which some have interpreted as a jab at the Queen (opens in new tab) and the royal family in general. Those on the "Harry and Meghan are totally dragging the Queen" team see this as a reference to the dueling statements released by both sides in early February (which is why it was necessary to review what these statements said before talking about the reaction to the Archewell logo).
Whether the inclusion of the service was intended as a message to the palace or others in the royal family is anyone's guess. It is easy for some royal fans and commentators to interpret this as a reference to the Sussex couple's recent tense statement with the Palace, but we must also remember that service has always been really important to Harry and Meghan (opens in new tab).
Harry and Meghan also explain exactly what they hope to accomplish through Archewell, writing on their About Us page, "Welcome to Archewell. Through our nonprofit and creative activations, we inspire systemic cultural change in every community, one compassionate action at a time."
Shady or not, Archewell's primary mission is definitely one we can get behind.
