Last week, Buckingham Palace issued a statement (opens in new tab) on how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal departure (opens in new tab) will be permanent and what it means for their remaining titles and patronage. Specifically, Harry will be stripped of his honorary military title (opens in new tab) and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (opens in new tab) will be removed from official royal patronage.

In an official statement on the matter, the Palace wrote:

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty the Queen that they will not return as active members of the Royal Family.

Following conversations with the Duke and Duchess, the Queen confirmed that by stepping away from royal duties, it would not be possible for them to continue with the responsibilities and obligations associated with their official duties. Therefore, the honorary positions and royal patronage held by the Duke and Duchess would be returned to Her Majesty the Queen and redistributed to active members of the royal family.

While everyone is saddened by the decision, the Duke and Duchess remain beloved members of the family.

In response, Harry and Meghan issued a brief (open in new tab) (and widely interpreted as strained) statement. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the United Kingdom and the rest of the world, as evidenced by their activities over the past year, and offer their continued support to the organizations they have represented, regardless of their official role. We can all live a life of service. Service is universal," a spokesman for the couple said.

Harry and Meghan's statement (open in new tab) reportedly upset some in the royal family, including Harry's brother, Prince William (open in new tab). is "truly saddened and genuinely shocked" by the statement.

Explaining the outrage the Sussex couple's statement has sparked within the royal family, another source close to the situation said, "There's no way they're responding back to the Queen," according to Page Six (opens in new tab), not just William, but other members of the royal family, are "stunned" not only by the fact that Harry and Meghan responded publicly to the palace's statement, but also by the tone of the statement shared by their spokespersons.

Following the royal exit, William is said to be suffering from a broken relationship with Harry (opens in new tab).

"After getting over his anger at the way things had happened, he was left in his brother's absence," a royal aide explained. 'They shared everything in their lives: their offices, their foundation, their daily meetings together. He will miss it forever."

The royal aide added that "William was a great friend to the royal family.

William also reportedly felt personally pressured by Harry's decision to step down from royal duties. According to a friend of William's, the Duke of Cambridge "is definitely feeling the pressure now that everything is falling on him. Because of his brother's choices, his future looks different.

Any added tension between the royals is simply the result of miscommunication and hopefully things can be resolved when travel becomes possible again.
