Royal Family "Doesn't Like" Kristen Stewart's Princess Diana Film, Says Royal Expert

There is already a great deal of buzz about Kristen Stewart's upcoming Princess Diana biopic "Spencer" (opens in new tab), but the royal family will not be among the film's fans. The film is set in 1991 and focuses on Diana as she makes the difficult decision to leave Prince Charles.

In a new interview in Us Weekly (opens in new tab), Robert Jobson, longtime royal family reporter and author of the forthcoming book Prince Philip's Century: The Extraordinary Life of the Duke of Edinburgh" (opens in new tab) and longtime royal reporter Robert Jobson, author of the forthcoming "Prince Philip's Century," predicted that the royal family "would not like it. 'But they would have expected it. This is the truth."

Jobson speaks authoritatively, at least about Princess Diana. He has covered the royal family for many years, and although he was only a young reporter when he covered Princess Diana, "I knew her as a person."

And apparently, those years of royal coverage and insight have convinced Jobson that it is "inevitable" that "the royal family would not like [the biopic] at all." Nevertheless, Jobson praised Stewart's resemblance to the late royal (open in new tab) (as most did when first-look photos were released in January).

"I think the most important thing is how well the actress can interpret the role. We'll just have to wait and see about that," Jobson explained.

"As for her picture, I thought it was remarkably similar to [Princess Diana's] picture. As someone who had met Princess Diana and knew her well, I thought it was really eerie. But you have to see it to believe it. My understanding is that it's going to be a good script and it's going to be a good premise, but it might not necessarily be something that actually happened in the way they're saying it did."

In November, Jimmy Kimmel Live! (open in new tab), Stewart discussed the film and admitted that he felt "protective" of Diana (open in new tab).

"I may not have grown up the same way she did, I was really young when she died. I was really young and didn't know what was going on. It's hard not to want to protect her. She was so young," she explained. My film is over the course of three days, and I'm really trying to poetically internalize what it felt like, rather than just give new information. We just love her."
