John Legend gives touching tribute after grandmother's death

John Legend paid a touching tribute to his late grandmother, Marjorie Maxine Stevens, who died Tuesday, just days before her 91st birthday. Legend called Stevens "the most caring and conscientious grandmother you can imagine" and spoke of his gratitude for "the life she lived, the love she shared with her many children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and beyond."

"She sent birthday cards in cash to all of us right up until her last days. She hosted Christmas celebrations every year until we literally could no longer fit into our little pink house on Heard Avenue in Springfield, Ohio," Legend wrote. 'She was active, curious, and energetic right up to her last days. She was always telling stories and offering words of encouragement and love. She supported us and cheered us on unconditionally."

"I am so happy to see all the fruits she has given us. She traveled the world with us and went to my first Grammy Awards. She got to experience the success of all her offspring," he continued, revealing a series of photos of his grandmother. 'We are the family and individuals we are today because of the love my grandmother poured into us. I am saddened by the loss of my grandmother, but most of all I am grateful for the full and blessed life she lived. May she rest in peace as she ran a great race."

Last September, Legend and Chrissy Teigen lost their son Jack (opens in new tab) in the middle of Teigen's pregnancy. Teigen posted a series of devastating photos from the hospital (opens in new tab), sharing the couple's "deep pain" after the loss, and Legend later dedicated a moving performance of his song "Never Break" (opens in new tab) to his wife.
