Queen Elizabeth sends private message to Joe Biden before inauguration
Much has been said over the years about Queen Elizabeth II's relationship with the Commander in Chief of the United States (opens in new tab). From official state visits to speculation about the hidden meaning behind her choice of jewelry (opens in new tab), royal watchers and political fans alike have been endlessly fascinated by the Queen's interactions with the President of the United States. While some, like the State Banquet, are on public record, the Queen is also known for her private communications with the President.
In keeping with that tradition, Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the Queen sent a private message (open in new tab) prior to Joe Biden's inauguration. The content of the message has not yet been confirmed, but it was reportedly a message (opens in new tab) congratulating the incoming U.S. president.
The Queen has historically been politically neutral and rarely comments on American leaders, but that has not stopped the public from speculating about her feelings toward the president. [Today's inauguration of President Joe Biden marks the 13th time during her reign that Her Majesty the Queen has seen a change of America's highest office. (Lyndon Johnson somehow missed meeting the British monarch, but instead received a personal visit (open in new tab) from the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret.)
Her Majesty the Queen is not the only royal family that has taken a liking to Biden. The Grand Duke of Luxembourg also sent a message (opens in new tab), offering his "heartfelt congratulations" on the inauguration, adding that he "looks forward to continuing and strengthening the longstanding relations and deep friendship between our two countries."
