The Sussexes have finally released their 2020 Christmas greeting (opens in new tab). The holiday message, which features an illustration of Harry, Meghan, Archie, and their two puppies in front of what looks like a small playhouse, was shared on social media this afternoon by animal welfare charity Mayhew (opens in new tab).

According to a spokesperson for the Sussexes, "The original photo of the family was taken at their home earlier this month by the Duchess' mother. The small Christmas tree, which includes handmade ornaments and other decorations, was chosen by Archie; the tree will be replanted after the vacations."

On Twitter, Mayhew said he was "thrilled" to receive Christmas wishes from their patron, Princess Meghan, and that the card included confirmation that the Sussexes had made a number of personal charitable donations this year, including one to Mayhew.

"This year we, as a family, have made several charitable donations with you in mind. One is an organization that supports animal protection and community welfare, and the other is a memorial fund for a dear friend that helps educate children in Uganda and eradicate poverty.

Mayhew also specifies in a link on their website (opens in new tab) that Meghan's donation will help "weather the continuing effects of the Covid 19 pandemic and enable us to reach out to struggling animals and people."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are spending their first Christmas together in the United States after celebrating Christmas with the royal family in Sandringham only twice in 2017 and 2018, and last year in Canada. (The couple spent the late fall and winter of 2019 in the Commonwealth country (opens in new tab) before announcing their intention to step down from their royal role in early 2020.)

But Meghan, Harry, and Archie are not the only ones spending Christmas this year in a completely different way. In the midst of the pandemic, the entire Royal Family has changed their traditional plans. In previous years, they would spend the vacation at Sandringham Manor and walk as a group to the Christmas service at the mansion's church.

Instead, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip will remain at Windsor Castle (open in new tab) this winter. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told T&C earlier this season that "after considering all appropriate advice, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have decided to spend this Christmas quietly at Windsor." This is the first time since 1988 that the Queen will not be celebrating Christmas at Sandringham.
