2020 was a momentous year for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Meghan Markle retired as a royal executive (open in new tab), bought a house in Montecito (open in new tab), signed a multi-million dollar Netflix deal (open in new tab), became financially independent from the royal family (open in new tab), volunteered through the COVID-19 pandemic ( (open in new tab), used their newly independent platform to fight for racial justice (open in new tab), and began challenging online hate speech (open in new tab). The Sussexes also experienced a major tragedy in July when Meghan suffered a miscarriage (open in new tab).
No wonder the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were the most tweeted about royals in 2020, according to Harper's Bazaar (opens in new tab); No. 1 was Meghan and No. 2 was Harry and his wife; in 2020, more than 20 million tweets about royal family members in total were made, a 30% increase from 2019.
Surprisingly, Kate Middleton and Prince William did not rank directly behind the Sussex couple. In fact, the Queen was third and Princess Diana was fourth. Prince Charles was the fifth most tweeted about royalty, and the buzz around the three probably has to do with the little-known Netflix show "The Crown" and the renewed controversy surrounding Princess Diana's 1995 "Panorama" interview.
"There is always a lot of talk about the royal family on Twitter, but this year there has been an explosion of desire for royal information, stories, and history," Jenna Ross, senior manager of entertainment partnerships at Twitter, told Harper's Bazaar. netflix Season 4 of "The Crown," distributed on Netflix, has contributed significantly to this conversation, with fans flocking to Twitter to talk about new episodes and share their reactions, resulting in over 500,000 tweets about the series since its premiere.
In sixth place was Prince Andreu, whose relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (open in new tab) came under renewed scrutiny and public disrepute, leading him to step down from his royal duties.
Prince William was next in seventh place, followed by Kate Middleton. Prince Philip was ninth, and the only Cambridge child in the top ten was Princess Charlotte...which royal story will Twitter be abuzz with in 2021?
