Kate Middleton and Prince William's college graduation video is so precious
Long before they became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton were (mostly) regular college students. A recent video released by the fan account @teatimewiththecambridges (opens in new tab) shows the couple graduating from the University of St. Andrews in 2005, with members of the Royal Family proudly watching from the audience.
The video, taken from "Kate & William: A Modern Royal Romance" (opens in new tab), shows the Duchess, then known as "Catherine Middleton," kneeling and receiving her cap and gown. It then cuts to a scene of William, known as "William Wales," doing the same. (His father's royal title was Prince of Wales, so it is likely that he took the surname "Wales" at school.) William's children would take the surname "Cambridge" (opens in new tab) at school, as his title is Duke of Cambridge)
William's father Prince Charles and stepmother Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, smiled proudly after his name was called.
His grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip, also beamed with excitement.
Although the video shows Kate and William marching in succession, according to The Telegraph (opens in new tab), the couple was not actually seen together during the graduation ceremony. The ceremony, however, was relatively small compared to the large state university graduation ceremonies one is accustomed to seeing in the United States.
However, they did pose together that day for this famous throwback photo.
William and Kate are believed to have first met at St. Andrews (open in new tab), but royal expert Katie Nichol (open in new tab) suggested that the couple actually crossed paths through a mutual friend before entering college in 2001.
Kate recalls the awkwardness of her first meeting with William, "I turned bright red and ran away very embarrassed," the Duchess of Cambridge revealed in a 2010 engagement interview.
