Selena Gomez felt "bullied" by "Saved by the Bell" joke about kidney transplants.

Peacock's new "Saved by the Bell" reboot came under fire last week for a scene in which a character jokes about Selena Gomez's kidney transplant (opens in new tab). Gomez has not publicly commented on the controversy, but a source said she took the scene as "bullying" and was "really upset."

In case you missed it: the recently launched reboot on NBC's streaming platform Peacock featured a scene in which two characters argued about Gomez's transplant. 'It's a fact that Selena Gomez's kidney donor was Justin Bieber's mother. God, I wish I had a cell phone so I could prove that. ......"

[12] [13] Entertainment Tonight reports (opens in new tab) that one of the characters said.

"Prove what, are you nuts? 'It was Demi Lovato's kidney. They're best friends, just like you and I were." In a later scene, graffiti can be seen in the background that reads, "Does Selena Gomez have a kidney?" (Incidentally, Gomez's actual kidney donor was her best friend Francia Raisa.)

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, a source close to Gomez said, "Selena was really upset by the scenes about her health in Saved by the Bell, and she was bullying and offensive. She thought it was bullying and offensive," the source said. The source added, "She felt like her kidney transplant and others who had gone through it were used as a joke at her expense."

Although Gomez has not spoken publicly about the incident, Raisa criticized the show and its producer's subsequent apology on social media. Peacock, NBCUniversal, and the executive producer of Saved by the Bell issued a statement after the joke was echoed online, saying, "We apologize. It was never our intention to disrespect Selena's health. We have been in contact with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC.

On Twitter, Raisa wrote, "I appreciate the apology, but let's not forget the donors who felt potentially offended and dismissed from the spray paint on the wall." In a subsequent tweet (opens in new tab), she continued. 'As a kidney donor, I want to show love and let other donors know you are not alone. You are seen. You are appreciated. You are so brave and your selfless acts are so appreciated and valued!" He continued.
