Laverne Cox and friends targeted in transphobic attack in Los Angeles

Laverne Cox and a friend of hers were subjected to a transphobic attack while strolling through Griffith Park in Los Angeles on Saturday, she shared on Instagram Live. Cox said she was "shocked and dragged along," before recounting the horrific attack.

Cox said she and her friend were walking in the park when a man "very aggressively" asked for time. 'My friend who was with me told him the time, looked at his watch and told him the time. My friend said, 'Screw you.'"

The man then physically assaulted Cox's friend, she said. 'I was walking along and in a split second I heard it all happening. Then all of a sudden a man attacked my friend. The guy was kind of hitting my friend, and then my friend went towards him and I was like, 'Oh my God! ' and I took out my cell phone and called 911.

"The guy wanted me to answer [when he asked me the time] so he could tell if I was trans," Cox continued. 'I don't know why, and I don't know why it matters. After all, who cares? I'm wearing a hoodie, yoga pants, fully covered, and a mask. Who cares?"

"It never ceases to shock me. This has happened before and many times. I've been transgender my whole life and I've been harassed and bullied my whole life.

Cox recalled that trans people consistently face violence simply for being present in public (as of this month, according to the Human Rights Campaign (open in new tab), at least 39 trans or gender non-conforming people have been murdered in the United States)." The world is not safe. I don't like to think about it too much, but it's the truth. If you're a trans person, it's the truth, and it's not safe." Obviously, I know this very well. It's really sad."

She concluded by urging her followers not to blame themselves if they are exposed to transphobia. Cox said, "It's important for me to remind myself and to remind you all that when something like this happens, it's not your fault." 'It is not your fault that people are not cool with your presence in the world. It's not my friend's fault, and it's not my fault. We have the right to walk in the park."
