Princess Diana's butler says "The Crown" is "pretty close to the truth."
Netflix's "The Crown" is considered fiction, but one source close to the royal family, Princess Diana's former butler Paul Burrell, told The Sun that some of the events depicted, particularly with regard to Diana and Charles, are "pretty close to the truth." Interestingly, the royal family has not only said "no" but "categorically refused" when it comes to fact-checking the events of the show (open in new tab).
Burrell weighs in on how the Netflix drama portrayed the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana (opens in new tab) and how the always wonderful Josh O'Connor (opens in new tab) correctly portrayed Prince Charles In an interview with The Sun (opens in new tab), Burrell said, "Josh O'Connor plays Prince Charles as an uncaring, cold person. Josh O'Connor plays Prince Charles as a rather unkind and cold person. Burrell continued: "He married perhaps the most beautiful woman in the world. That's what you get from The Crown.
Burrell worked closely with Princess Diana for 10 years and has commented on the deceased many times (opens in new tab). He told The Sun that he believes Princess Diana's surge in popularity was the cause of the rift. 'We're seeing Prince Charles' star not rise, while an unknown young woman rises, and her popularity is higher than his. That's the problem."
Burrell added, "Diana told me." When I married, I thought my husband would be there for me, caring for me, supporting me, encouraging me. And to the skeptics who doubt that accuracy, Burrell says, " There are people who jump up and say, 'That's not true,' well, it's pretty close to the truth."
