Barack Obama Says Michelle Obama Did Not Fully Allow Him to Run for President

Running for president (opens in new tab) is not only a daunting task for the person running for office, but also for the candidate's family, as the campaign process alone can be exhausting and daunting. That is why when Barack Obama (opens in new tab) first approached his wife Michelle Obama (opens in new tab) about running for America's highest political office, Michelle Obama made it clear that she did not want him to do it.

"Her first reaction was 'no,'" Obama explained in a recent interview with Stephen Colbert of The Late Show (opens in new tab) while promoting his new book, A Promised Land. I told her, "We still have to think through all the different elements of it, and at the end of it, if you still say no, then it's no."

Apparently, Obama (open in new tab) decided to run for president after all, and Michelle just went along with that decision.

"And she sort of changed her mind. But it is true that my decision to run for president right after I had been through a tough race put Michelle and our children in a very stressful and difficult situation."

The impact of this decision on the couple has tailed off and affected their relationship throughout the eight years of Obama's tenure in the White House.

"Michelle remained angry with me about it," he admitted, adding, "We rekindled it often, but she remained angry with me about it for eight years."
