Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Defends Harry Styles After Being Criticized for Dress
Earlier this month, Harry Styles (open in new tab) appeared on the cover of Vogue's December issue (open in new tab) and spoke of his desire to break down gender barriers in fashion (open in new tab). In the feature, the singer wore both men's and women's clothing, including a gorgeous couture gown, which drew some criticism. However, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (opens in new tab) is the latest public figure to defend Stiles (opens in new tab).
Asked what she thought of Styles' decision to wear the dress in the publication (open in new tab), AOC (open in new tab) said on her Instagram Stories, "It looks great. The masculine and feminine elements are beautifully balanced. The styling of her hair and jacket also gives me a James Dean vibe."
She continued. 'Some people are very sensitive to examining and exploring gender roles in society, which makes some people angry. Maybe it causes some people anger and anxiety around masculinity/femininity/etc. If so, maybe that's part of the point. Stay with that reaction, think about it, examine it, explore it, engage it, and grow with it.
She concluded by saying. "What's the point of making something if it doesn't make people think, feel, or reflect? What is the point of making something if it doesn't make people think, feel, or reflect? Especially as artists and creators? Who wants to see the same thing all the time? I don't even explore my own assumptions.
In the original interview, Stiles said, "Clothes are for fun, for experimentation, for playing. What is really exciting is that all these lines are falling apart. When you break down the barriers of 'there are clothes for men and there are clothes for women,' it obviously opens up a lot more space for you to play."
