Demi Lovato jokes about "calling off engagement" with Max Erlich at People's Choice Awards
Demi Lovato hosted the People's Choice Awards on Sunday night and reflected on the hectic days of 2020 in her opening monologue. The former couple split in September (opens in new tab), but Ehrlich proposed two months later (opens in new tab).
"Honestly, this year has been the longest three years of my life, so I'm so excited to be here tonight," Lovato said, People reports (opens in new tab). 'Don't get me wrong, it started out amazing. We performed at the Grammys, we sang the national anthem at the Super Bowl. But then COVID hit and everything shut down.
"So I did what everyone else did: I went into lockdown mode and got engaged. I painted, I took pictures, I meditated, I tested the limits of Postmates Unlimited. I also quit Instagram four times, though I didn't know this could happen. I watched seven seasons of Pretty Little Liars, got my engagement broken off, and searched for aliens in the desert. So basically, I'm just like everyone else!"
A source told People at the time of the breakup that Lovato and Ehrlich broke up because he kept his distance (opens in new tab)." Demi and Max were basically together 24/7 for months. 'We were living in a bubble with zero stress, and everything was just so much fun. Now we are both working and on separate coasts."[7
Another source said that Lovato began to have doubts about Erich (opens in new tab) and E! "There was a lot of tension and Demi left him to clear her head. She did not know who Max really was and could not believe he had good intentions." There were many red lights that she tried to ignore and turn a blind eye to"
