Kate Middleton makes surprise appearance at Remembrance Day service in London

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the UK's decision earlier this week to impose a second blockade, Kate Middleton (opens in new tab) attended the National Service of Remembrance ceremony at the Cenotaph in London to commemorate Remembrance Day (opens in new tab). The Duchess of Cambridge, along with her mother-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, stood on a balcony overlooking the Cenotaph, which honors servicemen who lost their lives in World War I and World War II.

On this occasion, Duchess Kate wore a custom black coat by Alexander McQueen (opens in new tab) with shoulder detailing. According to the Daily Mail (opens in new tab), she accessorized her chic look with a Philip Treacy hat and diamond and pearl drop earrings borrowed from Queen Elizabeth (opens in new tab). Camilla and Kate kept to the current COVID-19 guidelines and kept their distance from each other on opposite sides of the balcony.

Queen Elizabeth also watched the service from the balcony.

The official Kensington Palace Instagram account shared a photo of the service, writing, "On #RembranceSunday the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with the Queen and members of the Royal Family, attended the annual Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph." The caption continued, " This year @RoyalBritishLegion invited all of us to observe two minutes of silence in our windows and doorways at 11am on Sunday, November 8, to remember and honor those who sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom."

During the socially distanced service, Prince William and Prince Charles laid a wreath at the Cenotaph to honor all military personnel who lost their lives during the war.
