Prince Harry Says He Didn't Understand Unconscious Bias Until He Met Meghan Markle
In a GQ interview (opens in new tab) with anti-racism activist Patrick Hutchinson (opens in new tab), Prince Harry said he had "no idea" about unconscious bias and learned about racism after "living in [his wife's] shoes for a day or a week" He said he learned about racism after "living in [his wife's] shoes for a day or a week. Hutchinson, an author and fitness instructor, rose to prominence in June when she lifted a far-right counter-protester (opens in new tab) to safety at a protest in London.
"Unconscious bias, as I understand it, coming from my upbringing and education, I didn't know what it was. I didn't even know it existed. And, sad to say, it took me years and years to realize it." [Hutchinson added, "First of all, you have to be willing to listen and have the conversation.
Harry and Hutchinson also discussed the role of the media, which the Sussexes have addressed in their recent speaking engagements. Harry said, "People consume news, and if that news is given with an element of bias, it's almost impossible to get out of that bias and recognize where that bias is coming from." [That's why there is a huge responsibility on the media, as well as huge corporations and organizations, to push the right narrative," Hutchinson said. 'Because they are the ones creating the institutional racism. They are the ones creating it, so it's up to them to do the right thing."
