Prince William's life-changing chat with Prince Charles that led to his relationship with Kate Middleton

Prince William and Kate Middleton (opens in new tab) are thanking Prince Charles (opens in new tab) for making their love story possible. According to royal biographer and historian Robert Lacey (opens in new tab), the Cambridges would never have fallen in love if not for the life-changing story Prince Charles had with his son during his first year of college.

In his new book, Battle of Brothers: William and Harry - The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult) (opens in new tab), Lacey recounts Will's first year at St. Andrews School in Scotland when and reveals that the royal family almost expelled him from the school.

According to Lacey, Will "had no idea how "boring" life in a small seaside town in Scotland would be, in his words."

In fact, Will was so bored and generally unhappy that he seriously considered leaving school at the end of his first term and transferring to Edinburgh (open with a new tab). However, when Will discussed his plans with his father during the Christmas vacations that year, the older royal intervened and spoke with his son, which changed the course of history.

According to Lacey, one of Prince Charles' aides actually initiated the conversation to "show more fatherly spirit" to his heir and encourage his son to stick it out at St. Andrews (open in new tab). Prince Charles did just that, sitting Will down for a pep talk and convincing the prince to continue his education at St. Andrews.

Will has since spoken about his apprehension about St. Andrews and the role his father played in convincing him to continue down that path.

According to the Mirror (opens in new tab), "I think I was more bummed than homesick. 'My father was very understanding about it and realized that I probably had the same problems he did. We chatted a lot, and in the end we both realized that I absolutely had to go back."
