Jennifer Lawrence Says She Was a Republican Before Donald Trump Was Elected
In a recent appearance on the podcast Absolutely Not, Jennifer Lawrence said she used to be "a bit of a Republican" (opens in new tab) and revealed that she voted for John McCain rather than Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. Lawrence said that he used to be allied with Republicans on "fiscal" issues but disagreed with them on "social issues," and that the election of Donald Trump "changed everything" about his relationship with the Republican Party.
"It's very difficult to talk about politics. You don't want to talk about it. I'm an actor and I want people to see my movies," Lawrence told host Heather McMahan. 'I grew up Republican. My first president, my first vote, I voted for John McCain. I was a small Republican." [Luckily,] I grew up in a Republican home, and I could see the fiscal benefits of Republican policies and I could also see that social issues were not in line with my views," Lawrence continued. 'But with the election of Donald Trump, everything changed. [He] is an impeached president who broke many laws and refused to condemn white supremacy. I think that's the conclusion."
According to a report in The Independent (opens in new tab), Lawrence previously discussed his changing political beliefs on an October episode of Ilana Glazer's web series Cheat Sheet. 'I grew up in a Republican home and was told why I should vote Republican for tax reasons and religious reasons,' she said. 'And then as I grew up and became a citizen of the world, my personal beliefs began to change. [It's like I'm paying rent to live in this great country, I like things like hospitals and schools, and it makes sense to do my part as a citizen to make this country as great as it can be.
