Gal Gadot Addresses Backlash Over Controversial "Imagine" Video
It may feel like yesterday or a million years ago, but as the COVID-19 pandemic led to quarantine measures being implemented around the world, Gadot organized a group of celebrity friends to sing John Lennon's "Imagine" in a chorus, the results of which were posted on Instagram. Let's imagine together. Let's sing it together." Celebrities such as Kristen Wiig, Mark Ruffalo, Natalie Portman, Zoe Kravitz, and Cara Delevingne participated.
The video did not do as well as Gadot had hoped, with The New York Times accusing it of "horror" and "smug self-indulgence" (opens in new tab) In a new interview with Vanity Fair magazine (opens in new tab), Gadot responded, explaining the intent behind the video. He said, "Sometimes you try to do a good deed, but it's not the right good deed. I only had good intentions, and they came from the best place, and I just wanted to send light and love into the world."
"I started with some friends," she continued, "and then I told Kristen (Wig)." Everyone loved her, and she got a lot of people involved." Gadot summed up: "But, you know, I started it. All I can say is that I was going to do something good and pure, but it didn't transcend."
