Prince William had to turn off the David Attenborough documentary.

Cambridge kids may be big fans of David Attenborough, but the naturalist's latest BBC documentary, Extinction, was too upsetting for Prince George: It was too upsetting for him. At the launch of his new environmental initiative, the Earthshot Awards (open in new tab), Prince William spoke about watching the documentary with George and eventually turning it off.

"I recently watched a lot of David Attenborough's documentary with the kids. He said to me, 'I don't want to watch it anymore.'

"George said, 'How did this happen? ' He's seven years old and he's already asking me these questions. He really feels it, and I think every seven-year-old out there can relate to that," the Duke of Cambridge continued.

"And I think we have to spend the next 10 years repairing the planet so that we can pass it on to the next generation and future generations and maintain the prosperity of their lives as well."

Launched on Thursday, William's Earthshot Prize initiative (open in new tab) will award five prizes of £1 million each year for the next 10 years to people and organizations that make a positive environmental change. The prizes were launched with the goal of "transforming the current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism by highlighting the capacity of human ingenuity to effect change and inspire collective action."
