Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Call for an End to Structural Racism in the UK
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have launched a new campaign calling for an end to structural racism in the United Kingdom and honoring black British leaders and trailblazers. In an article in the Evening Standard (opens in new tab), the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said, "As long as structural racism exists, there will be generations of young people of color who do not start life with the same equal opportunities as white people. And as long as that continues, untapped potential will never be realized."
To mark the beginning of Black History Month in the UK, Meghan and Harry created a list of "Pioneers of the Next Generation," (opens in new tab) author and actor Michaela Coel, Edward Enninful, editor of British Vogue, author Afua Hirsch, Olympic boxer Nicola Adams, and other prominent black Britons were asked to nominate someone whose "cause-based work is creating a lasting legacy for the next generation of Britons." The list includes Liv Little, founder of gal-dem (open in new tab); Lavinia Stennett, education activist and founder of The Black Curriculum (open in new tab); Daniel Oreoluwa Jinadu, disability advocate; Henry Stone, author and poet
"If you are white and British, the world you see is often the same world you see on TV, in the media, and in role models celebrated around the country. That is not a criticism; it is reality. Many of us recognize this, but others don't realize not only the impact this has on our own perspectives and biases, but also the impact it has on young people of color."
"For people of color, especially young black Britons, the importance of representation in all parts of society, seeing role models with the same skin color as themselves, and seeing and reading stories of success and hope from people just like them are absolutely essential to opening doors of opportunity It is," Megan and Harry continued. 'Not only that, but having representation in positions of power and decision-making.'
