Woman's body found outside Kate Middleton and Prince William's Kensington Palace

On August 29, a woman's body was found in a pond outside Kensington Palace, the London home of Kate Middleton and Prince William, The Independent reported (opens in new tab). Police recovered the body from the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens, directly in front of the palace.

The woman, who has yet to be accurately identified, was initially thought to be the then-missing artist Endelion Lycett Green, and police mistakenly informed her family of her death. Her brother, John Lycett Green, later told friends that she had been found "alive, safe, and well."

A Metropolitan Police spokesman, in a statement to Sky News, said (open in new tab) "Police were called to Kensington Gardens W2 at 7:09 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, on a report of concern for the safety of a woman." The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained at this time, but is not considered suspicious. A postmortem examination will be conducted."

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were not at Kensington Palace when the body was found, but were vacationing with their children Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte at Balmoral, the Queen's Scottish estate; according to Sky, Princess Eugenie, who also lives at the palace, and her husband Jack Brooksbank, and other members of the royal family, who also live at the palace, were there at the time the body was found, according to Sky.
