The Marvels movie: everything we know

After years of publicity, the sequel to "Captain Marvel" will finally be released later this year. (Long gone are the days when Black Widow was the Marvel Cinematic Universe's only superwoman.) Marvel premiered the trailer for "The Marvels" on Tuesday, giving us our first look at the team of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Verani).

In addition to Larson, Parris, Velani, Jackson, and Park, the trailer also briefly shows Zawe Ashton in an unreleased villain role. Other confirmed cast members include Sagar Shaikh, Zenoiba Shroff, and Mohan Kapoor as Kamala's brother, mother, and father, respectively. There was also a pleasant surprise for Captain Marvel fans in the form of the return of everyone's favorite fraken, Goose.

For those who haven't kept up with the Disney + MCU shows (and to be fair, there are a lot), "The Marvels" is about a New Jersey heroine and Avengers fan, Kamala Khan, who is her idol, Carol, aka Captain Marvel herself The film begins with the events of the post-credits scene of the "Ms. Marvel" finale, in which she is replaced by The trailer explains a bit about what happened in this unexpected scene, showing Monica (who gained the ability to absorb energy through Wandavision) working as an astronaut on the Sabre space station with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). When Monica hits the jump point in the space continuum, she blinks, and Kamala appears, indicating that she, Carol, and the teen have indeed made a three-way turn, due to forces that have somehow connected them. [Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and exacted revenge on the Supreme Intelligence Agency. However, Carol is burdened with the burden of a destabilized universe with unforeseen consequences. When a mission takes her to an anomalous wormhole connected to Kree revolutionaries, her powers become intertwine. This unlikely trio must team up together and learn to work together to save the universe.

The Marvels represents several firsts for the MCU. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), the MCU's first black woman and fourth female director. The trailer features Park Seo-joon of "Itaewon Gumi" and "Secretary Kim's Unusual Love" in an undetermined role. He joins Korean stars Claudia Kim and Ma Dong-seok in the MCU, and K-drama fans are already excited about his role (and his character's hairstyle (opens in new tab)).

The Marvels will hit theaters on November 10, 2023.
